Scientists for Tomorrow would like to invite you to the community garden opening and showcase event at James Hedges Elementary School, located in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, 4747 S. Winchester Ave. The event will take place August 16, 2013 from 1pm-2pm. There will be food, live dance performances, guest speakers and a final presentation of the work done by the teens that participated in our program.
For six weeks, thirteen young seventh grade girls from James Hedges Elementary, learned about the ecology and conservation of plants and people through the exploration of STEM. The teens learned about human physiology, plants structure, growth and function and the nature of the interaction between human and plants. They also developed and built bird houses, greenhouses and three huge garden beds to be put outside their school.
Scientists for Tomorrow, is a program initiative offered by the department of Science and Mathematics- Columbia College Chicago. During the academic year, the program operates in more than 30 Chicago sites and community centers offering various STEM workshops and internships for lower and upper grade students. The program also offers bilingual Spanish and English STEM workshops for parents, as well as creating family science events at the Museum of Science and Industry, Garfield Park Conservatory and the Field Museum throughout the academic year.
